The Verb “Engage”

I knew him
as a good-natured guy,
fetching, friendly,
full of fun –
a nice young man
for my daughter, I thought.

They toughened him up
with objects like ‘target’
at boot camp.

I saw him on leave;
buzz-cut and burnished,
all business, proud
of those military nouns
he was wearing.

Just recently
his name was mentioned
on the nightly news

in connection with the killing
of some innocent
civilians.
